Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
