The Top Release of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Top Position.

At first glance, this work could seem more like an arduous scholarly examination rather than the latest pop project from an artist who just had a previous single featured an international K-pop icon. Broken across 4 different parts and performed in 13 languages, we have a dizzying classical-tinged opus investigating female mystery, religious ascent, and corporal change, often via the lens of various women saints. The end of a love affair—a topic handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars heavenward here, carried by the constant sound of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning composer within a vast roll call of contributors. The pure ambition alone makes the efforts of other artists seem quite modest.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That this album succeeds in avoid dry academic posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, with full praise belonging to the artist. Although it's not her first project to blend the past and modern styles, the stakes are much greater on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more pronounced. The element that truly raises this fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, is a core spirit of joy. Similar to the iconic artist at her height, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener up in its whirlwind. When she's breaking your heart apart, you nevertheless desire to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This playful spirit shines clearly during a stirring piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls away, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh and a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds in like comedic force. The track immediately shifts to the frenetic single featuring racing orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with Lux is that you rarely quite understand—or even want to predict—where you will go to next."

Nearly every song concludes in a totally distinct point than where it started. One moment explores the transient trappings of fame with a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing in electronic chaos. Another, a cut echoing her previous rhythmic style begins off dark and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, until sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Balance Between Art and Pop

Another crucial balancing act of Lux is straddling the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is little coincidence that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of major charts: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. A song sung primarily in the English language builds around a chorus that seems to gather increasingly nagging melodies while it spins upward. That trick is echoed by another powerful track that grows and contracts, intertwining layered tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of other heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the singing have a sharp edge, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album is popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for high artistry in an era of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that masterfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of hidden treasure that takes patience to fully mine but never feels like a chore. Where other big pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, Lux offers a lavish feast at which the guests around the table, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about useless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
