French authorities to begin stopping small boats in English Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start intercepting small boats in the English Channel, following months of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to support the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have rarely acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says personnel will start taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official left government.
That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and President, when French police were observed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will again be allowed to stop boats before they collect migrant passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are currently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adjust to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
