Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

The former president was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
